What makes or breaks Technical Metal?

Technical metal is flashy, fast and often times, heavy as an ocean liner. For me, it all gets a bit… watery when it’s too technical.

I get it. You can play guitar. Your bassist can do sweeps for days. Your drummer is more machine than man. If you play technical metal though, remember that your goal should be the same for if you played any other type of music, whether it be thrash metal or pop punk: write good songs.

I find that a lot of the bands of a technical nature play riffs more than songs. They write a lot of really fast technical riffs, throw them together, and call it something extremely obscure (often medical related or some weird way of saying you’ve removed somebody’s head). It’s like if you’re talking and you’re stumbling over words. The message gets lost.

Break it up. You don’t have to solo for 6 minutes every song for it to sound technical. It gets boooooooooring. You don’t want your music to sound boring.
